James Redfield grew up in a rural area near Birmingham, Alabama. As a young man, he studied Eastern philosophies, including Taoism and Zen, He attended Auburn University where he majored in sociology. He later received a Master's degree in counseling and spent more than 15 years as a therapist for abused adolescents. It was during this time, that James was drawn to the human potential movement. He would often turn to the movement's theories about intuitions and psychic phenomena which he would use to help better assist his clients during therapy sessions.
In 1989, James quit his job as a therapist to begin focusing on writing full time. His writings were inspired byhis combined interests in interactive psychology, Eastern and Western philosophies, science, futurism, history, ecology and mysticism.
In 1992, James Redfield self-published his first novel, The Celestine Prophecy. The immediate interest from booksellers and readers made it one of the most successful self-published books of all time. Eventually, Warner Books bought the rights to the book and published the hard cover edition in March 1994. The book quickly made the New York Times Best Seller List, as well as the sequel, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision.
